Patient Log has been implemented by Melbourne University to allow Medical School Students to log details of patient encounters on handheld devices. The data captured is then synchronised to a server, where reports can be produced automatically by the Patient Log management and reporting application. The product, which works on Windows Mobile Pocket PC PDAs with a browser interface, should increase the quality and efficiency of the delivery of medical education.
“Importantly, the PDA’s help teaching staff to ensure that their students are getting appropriate experience” |

Patient Log allows supervisors to ensure their students have had experience in a variety of patient encounters. Via the reporting system, supervisors can evaluate where students require further experience and the areas that students are considered competent in.
“The program provides students with ready access to up to date information about health conditions and treatments. In this way it contributes to their medical knowledge on the job, without them having to return to their computers,” |
- Professor Bill Adam, Coordinator of Patient Log Program, School of Rural Health, Melbourne University |
Patient Log also acts as a reference tool for the students. When diagnosing a patient students can instantly refer to the comprehensive medical guidence material stored on the PDA. Therefore students can further their knowledge regarding each condition they encounter.
